A new study has found that Viagra is the most commonly prescribed drug for erectile dysfunction (ED) in the UK.
Viagra, a prescription-only medication, is commonly prescribed for the treatment of ED. In the study, researchers analysed data from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for Viagra (sildenafil) and found that men taking the medication for ED were more likely to suffer from ED compared to those taking a generic version of the drug.
Viagra was the least commonly prescribed drug in the UK, and only 2.8% of participants in the study said they used it. In contrast, the proportion of men using Viagra for erectile dysfunction increased from 1.8% in the UK in 2011 to 2.8% in 2013.
Viagra is available without a prescription in most countries and is available in generic form under several brand names such as Cialis, Levitra and Staxyn. However, many men are not aware of the possible side effects of Viagra, so it’s important to check the product labels to ensure you are taking the correct medication.
The results, published on Wednesday in the journal, highlight the importance of medical supervision when prescribing medications to patients.
“The results of the study confirm the need for regular health checks on patients who take Viagra and are unable to take it,” said lead author Dr Catherine Davies, from the University of London.
She added: “This information is important for health professionals and patients, as it encourages them to consult with their healthcare provider to ensure Viagra is appropriate for their condition and to prescribe the appropriate treatment.”

The study also found that the use of certain ED drugs is associated with an increased risk of hospitalisations and deaths from cardiovascular diseases.
Researchers, however, are still working to understand the relationship between ED drugs and premature ejaculation.
